Commonly Asked Questions

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?

Modern science can’t yet explain how acupuncture works or when it attempts to do so it often completely misses the point. The art of acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theory which, over thousands of years of observation concluded that the physical, mental and emotional health of an individual is determined by the quantity and quality of an essential energetic substance called “Qi”. Qi nourishes all body tissues and organs as well as mind and emotions. Qi is often described as electro-magnetic energy. It travels in the body along well-defined pathways called meridians. Tiny needles are inserted into the skin along these meridians at the areas of maximum energetic activity – acupuncture points. This has a profound effect on the nervous system and the body’s innate ability to regulate and heal.

IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?

Acupuncture is very safe when administered by licensed practitioners who attended and completed the full course of study at a nationally sanctioned acupuncture school. In addition to our training in theory and application we are also fully trained in proper technique along with clean needle technique. This training is emphasized repeatedly in the extensive clinical courses, which are under the direction of licensed practitioners. We use only disposable acupuncture needles, which are disposed of according to state regulations.

DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?

Often people are interested in acupuncture but afraid of needles. However, the tiny filament needles many times thinner than painful hypodermic needles, and insertion is virtually painless. Brief needling sensation varies from pinching to stinging sensation to feeling temporary numbness or heaviness and are a sign that the treatment is having a positive effect. In fact, most people find acupuncture treatments relaxing and refreshing.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL BE NEEDED?

That is a very good question and very difficult to answer. It depends on many factors including the duration, severity, nature of the patient’s complaint, the general state of health and well being. We’ve found that an initial treatment schedule of twice a week will be the most successful in resolving the main complaint in the shortest amount of time. Usually patients feel a difference after the first treatment. As the healing energy builds momentum the positive effect is more and more.
