Cranio-Sacral Therapy

Cranio-Sacral Therapy applies gentle, extremely light pressure to the cranio-sacral system. This system extends from the bones of the skull to the sacrum and coccyx that form the tail end of the spine. The blood that circulates through our bodies is filtered before it is allowed to enter the brain and is then called cerebrospinal fluid or CSF. It circulates throughout the craniosacral system supplying nourishment to the entire nervous system. The entire craniosacral system also has its own respiratory rhythm which is referred to as the craniosacral rhythm. In other words, it breathes, completely independent of the respiration of our lungs. When there are distortions, which can be caused by trauma, in the plates that form the skull, the flow of CSF gets blocked and parts of the nervous system become deprived of CSF. The practitioner uses no more than 5 grams of pressure to correct the distortions and restore balance and flow to the system. When the rhythm is restored the CSF can circulate to all areas of the brain and spinal cord.

Cranio-Sacral Therapy can treat a variety of acute and chronic neuro-musculo-skeletal complaints. The complaint of pain or discomfort anywhere in the body can commonly be traced back to a past head trauma. It is useful in the treatment of TMJ problems, chronic headaches and inflammatory conditions.  Because of the central position of the nervous system in controlling, coordinating and communicating with every system in the body, any condition at all may be helped by craniosacral therapy.
